Big Sur, CA

Updated: Mar 21, 2018

After our wedding we wanted a quiet place to relax, reflect on our marriage and get away from it all. We choose to do that in one of California's most majestic places ... Big Sur.

"This is the way life goes in Big Sur. Waiting for the mail, watching the sea-lions in the surf or the freighters on the horizon, sitting in the tubs at Hot Springs, once in a while a bit of drink - and, most of the time, working at what ever it is that you came here to work on, whether it be painting, writing, gardening or the simple art of living your own life." ~ Hunter S. Thompson

We drove up the Pacific Coast Highway, a winding and cliffside road beside the deep blue waters of the ocean. Every scenic overlook along the way seemed to be asking us to stop and reflect on the beauty. We stayed at the Big Sur Lodge, nestled in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. The lodge was a short drive to Pfeiffer Beach, McWay Falls (pictured) and near to hiking trails. There where also close by to restaurants; the Big Sur Bakery, Fernwood Bar & Grill and Ripplewood Resort Restaurant where particularly delicious. Big Sur was also an hour drive up the coast to Carmel-By-The-Sea, Pacific Grove and Monterey. Pacific Grove reminded us of a eastern seaside town; full Cape Cod architecture, fishing piers and oceanside attractions. Back at the lodge, every night we used the fireplace in our cabin. The cabin came complete with a daily delivery of fire wood. Sitting by the fire, reading a book and listening to the sounds of the forrest that surround us was the ideal moment of peace and relaxation. We would very much recommend visiting Big Sur to any one looking to get away from the chaos of modern life. Cell phone reception was non-existent and our cabin was not equipped with a television. Be warily of the time of year you visit; we came in late October and while the resorts and lodges were pretty empty, because of the weather, many trails where inaccessible. So if you ever found yourself luck enough to visit "one of the most beautiful coastlines anywhere in the world," we assure you will not regret our stay at Big Sur.
